Life in this sin-laden world can leave us discouraged, overwhelmed, and even despairing. Christians are not immune. The apostle Paul admitted that he and his companions were “so utterly burdened beyond our strength that we despaired of life itself” (2 Corinthians 1:8).
Paul knew what it felt like to be beaten down by life, but he also knew where genuine comfort could be found. He called God “the Father of mercies and God of all comfort” (2 Corinthians 1:3). God does not promise that Christians will avoid suffering. He promises to meet us in it, comfort us through his Word and his people, and give us strength the world cannot provide.
