Careless Words

There’s no doubt that our internet culture has provided an increased sense of anonymity, which has prompted an onslaught of abrasive and even savage words that would rarely be uttered in person. Face-to-face communication has always encouraged us to put a governor on our mouths—fearing we might get punched in the mouth! But today people can lob verbal bombs with seeming impunity; hiding behind screen names while holed up behind closed doors.

Though the “invincible critic” may now be fearless, the Bible promises that for all who dish up their “evil treasure” of unbridled words, there will most certainly come a “day of judgment” on which “people will give an account for every careless word they speak” (Mt.12:35-36). There is nothing anonymous that will not be called into the scrutinizing light of personal accountability (Lk.12:2). That is one reason Solomon wisely told all people to, “Fear God” knowing that he “will bring every deed into judgment, with every secret thing, whether good or evil” (Eccl.12:13-14).

So, while today’s brash electronic words may hurt us, we must all remember that screen names and internet anonymity provide only temporary insulation. Everyone and everything will one day be brought before the tribunal of the Creator.
