Right Side of History
These days we often hear cultural pundits speak about the need for everyone to get “on the right side of history.” Now there’s some media commentary I can get behind. I am all for it! In a fundamental sense, calling people to faithfully follow Christ and uncompromisingly adhere to God’s word is all about being on the right side of history.
The problem is, of course, that today’s social avant-garde is willfully ignorant as to where history is going. We, on the other hand, know that just as God delivered on Christ’s first-coming promises, one day, as sworn, history will culminate with Christ establishing “a new earth in which righteousness dwells” (2Pt.3:13), where all who rejected and spurred God’s truth will be cast out and excluded (Rev.22:15).
Assured of where human history is headed we would all do well to get on the right side of it, making peace with our Creator, and choosing, if necessary, “to be mistreated with the people of God rather than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin” (Heb.11:25). So let us be willing and unashamed to stand apart in a deteriorating society, knowing that God is working history toward that Day when Christ will ascend the throne in his Kingdom just as he has promised.
